Default World Of Warcraft - Warlock weapons?

My highest character is a Warlock and I have had her since the beginning, she was my first proper character. I realised that Warlocks can use different weapons such as staves, daggers, wands, and one-handed swords. Since the beginning, I have used staves and wands with my Warlock, but I was wondering, what actually is the best weapon for them? I wonder why they can equip weapons such as daggers and swords seeing as they have no melee skills, so why can they?

Well because there are some caster swords out there.

You may have noticed that there are different types of staffs out there. There are staff with stats that your warlock would care about (things like int, spellpower). And staffs that your warlock don't care about (agility). As a warlock you would obviously pass on the second kind of staff since agility does nothing for you.

Its the same with swords and daggers, there are swords and daggers out there with stats that benefit other classes (str, agility) like warriors and rogues and swords that have stats that benefit you (again int and spellpower).

With swords/daggers you have to carry an offhand. Its pretty much just an extra item that you put on your other hand. The sword/dagger by itself has stats less than that of a staff, but with an offhand item. The stats are on par.

The difference between them is twofold. Staffs tend to give higher primary stats, while the sword/offhand combo (assuming they are all of equal item level) will give you higher spellpower and secondary stats. Additionally the sword/offhand combo gives you more flexibility as you can keep one while upgrading the other and so on. The downside is that well, its 2 new items you have to keep up with and upgrade.
