I want to try out the public test realm on wow but if i try it with one of my main characters can I still use him on the normal servers?

What the PTR does it let you create a new character already at max level with raid gear to test out raid content. It doesn't transfer characters over. If it did however, it would just make a copy, not actually take the character.
