WoW Paladin question, help please.?

I've never been a pally before always been inclined toward mages and dps. I'd like to have a go with a proper tank. If I want to be a tank pally is it better for me to go with ret or prot? I m thinking in the long run with instances and battlegrounds, which one is better for mobs?
