im a noob so be simple but explanatory.

frost mage has water element in talent tree i think can not rember off hand

just do /who mage in game and ask a level 85 or what ever

If you're a frost mage you will get a water elemental, but you need to reach level 10 or so to be able to choose between fire, arcane and frost I think...the other two don't offer a minion. You might want to switch to a warlock instead if you want to do that.
