I am a level 85 fire mage but my gear is awful. I know you can get good gear by doing raids but I doubt I will be able to do them because my gear is that bad. I do a mix between PvP and PvE but hoping to join a raiding guild once I get good gear. What would be the best gear for my fire mage?

Go to wowhead.com it will show you whay gear you can get and where to get it from. If your a new lvl 85 you need to random heriocs from the dungeon finder. Once you get to about ilvl 345-350 start doing ZA/ZB.
With all the honor points you can get to about ilvl 365 rather quickly.
